Acute exacerbations of COPD are a frequent cause of admission to the hospital and the ICU. A number of studies have identified the effectiveness of NIPPV in patients with an acute exacerbation of COPD.
BiPAP assists patients by reducing the effort involved in breathing, resting respiratory muscles, reducing CO2 levels and also reducing the need for endotracheal intubation and the risks associated with that procedure. This simulation allows learners to clinically assess a non-intubated spontaneously breathing patient, recommend and initiate NIPPV, and manage ventilation and oxygenation.
