Lung Protective Ventilation: Low Tidal Volume

Lung protective ventilation strategies that use more physiological tidal volumes and appropriate levels of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) are considered best practice in the care of many critically ill ventilated patients. However, the practice of lung protective ventilation has not been widely adopted.

Research has shown that there is a gap between what clinicians should be doing, what they think they’re doing, and what is actually being done. A clearer understanding of the Lung Protective Strategy (LPS) protocol would provide clinicians with the appropriate knowledge to apply the best care to patients developing signs of lung injury.

This simulation for RespiSim® gives learners hands-on experience assessing hypercapnea & hypoxemia in a mechanically ventilated patient. Learners must recognize when goals of oxygenation and ventilation are not being safely met and determine when a LPS approach is appropriate.
