Airway Resistance and Static Compliance in CMV

Understanding the basics of the respiratory system is the key to managing a patient on mechanical ventilation. As a clinician, it is important to care about the effects of lung mechanics during mechanical ventilation management in order to provide the most adequate ventilatory support with a minimum of adverse effects.

Intended Learners: Intro to Mechanical Ventilation Students

This package of four RespiSim® bench simulations takes learners beyond theoretical understanding to hands-on learning using a realistic respiratory “patient”, the ASL 5000 Breathing Simulator. This package thoroughly prepares learners to understand the effects of lung compliance and airway resistance in volume control and pressure control ventilation. It is an excellent way to solidify theoretical knowledge before advancing to more complex clinical simulations or training.

Package of Four Simulations

  • Assessment of Airway Resistance in Volume Control
  • Assessment of Airway Resistance Pressure Control
  • Assessment of Lung Compliance in Volume Control
  • Assessment of Lung Compliance Pressure Control

2 Scenario Concept Presentations (each approx. 20 minutes)

  • Clinical assessment of both resistance and compliance in a patient receiving mechanical ventilation in the CMV-Volume & Pressure modes of ventilation
  • Tools the bedside clinician can utilize to determine the presence of each condition
  • Airway resistance (patient, ventilator, and capnograph assessment)
  • Static compliance (ventilator assessment)
